Area 48 Color

Curved yoke, detachable barndoors – including 48V PSU mounted on the unit.

Features:

RGB + White + White (RGBWW)
New Area 48 Color delivers stunning saturated and tinted colors as well as precise clean white light in both 2700°K and 5600°K. At 13,000 Lumen output, it matches the original Area 48’s famous remote phosphor daylight and tungsten color rendering at both ends of the spectrum (2500K to 10,000K). All while drawing only 160W at full power. And it is 48V!

Raises Color Accuracy Bar
Precision color is a hallmark of BB&S Lighting. To ensure the finest color rendition, BB&S utilizes RGB and both white LEDs (2700K and 5600K) that are selectively binned to produce outstanding rendition.

Soft Output Wide Dispersion
Like the Area 48 Studio and Soft, Area 48 Color fixtures can provide output comparable to a 1500W Tungsten soft light. Maximum output is available in 5600°K and 2700°K. They deliver soft light, with wide 105º dispersion at 97.5 TLCI.

Specifications:

  • No color shift during dimming
  • Most compact RGB + white + white fixture
  • Touchscreen for DMX/RDM tweaking
  • 97.5 TLCI throughout white range
  • Full output at 5600°K & 2700°K
  • Lightweight
  • Extreme binning ensures best LEDs
  • White light range: 2500°K to 10,000°K
  • Plus/minus green, plus/minus magenta settings
  • Full range dimming: 8/16 Bit 0% to 100%
  • 48V
  • Flicker-free at any frame rate
  • Super-fast synced strobe ability

Intuitive Touchscreen Operation

An on-board touchscreen offers local control or users can perform ON/OFF and color/white tweaking plus settings for plus/minus green, plus/minus magenta facilitate accuracy. They also offer full range dimming (8/16 Bit from 0% to 100%) and run flicker-free at any framerate, to fully accommodate high-speed shooting. It also accurately generates speed adjustable strobe effects within the fixtures software.

Testimonials

As studio lighting technology has evolved through the years, the Mississippi State University Television Center upgraded fixtures in a piecemeal approach as our limited budget allowed. Over time, this created a studio environment where nothing matched; we were running a combination of incandescent, fluorescent, and early generation LED lighting all on the same sets. This annoyed our shade technicians and producers, all of whom just wanted a consistent color balance and instrumentation quality.

We've known of the remote phosphor technology pioneered by BB&S for several years and at the 2023 National Association of Broadcasters show, we started discussing seriously the possibility of starting over with our studio lighting plot. Working with the BB&S sales team, we identified instruments that met our production and budget needs and designed a new plot for our studio sets. We also made the decision to transition away from 3200K color temperatures and embrace the 5600K lighting available on the market today.
We transitioned to the BB&S lighting in the winter of 2024. The setup and installation were straightforward, and we've been pleased with the look on camera (though I'm still trying to get used to 5600K in person)! Our color temperature is consistent across all areas of the studio set and the light intensity is within ten footcandles. The soft lighting provided by the Reflect series instrumentation is an improvement over the hodgepodge of soft and hard lighting we were used before; it's created a much nicer look for our studio programming.

The build quality of the Reflect series is solid, with a metal housing that feels secure enough to survive a drop from the lighting grid (though I imagine the manufacturer would discourage this). Though we are very early in our lighting experience with BB&S instruments, we have found them to be highly dimmable and significantly more energy efficient than our old instrumentation. We look forward to working with the Reflect series in our facility and anticipate a long relationship with the company.
